// The approach

We Run It Like
An Insurance
Company.

Insurance companies don't write policies into hurricanes. They assess conditions and only underwrite risk when conditions are favorable. We apply the same discipline to selling ES puts.

Every Sunday we check whether ES is trading above our key exponential moving averages — confirming an uptrend. We only sell a put when this condition is met. When the market is in a downtrend, we stand down entirely and take no position — just like an insurer refusing to write hurricane coverage when a storm is on the radar.

When conditions are green we sell an out-of-the-money ES put, collect the premium, and let it expire worthless by Friday. 99% of the time that's exactly what happens. On the rare occasion we're assigned, we hold the long ES futures position until recovery — max drawdown 2–3.73%, avg recovery ~7 days.

// Why ES puts specifically

ES Puts Are
The Superior
Instrument.

You can follow these trades using SPY, SPX, or XSP options. But ES puts are preferred — and for four specific reasons that matter to put sellers.

Capital EfficiencyFutures margin — most efficientModerateSimilar to SPX but smaller
On AssignmentLong ES futures — hold and sell next Sunday's putCash settled — no position to holdAssigned ETF shares — additional management
NOTE Weekly ES options are European style — confirmed by CME Group. Quarterly ES options are American style. Since PutYield trades weeklies only, there is zero early assignment risk. SPX and XSP are comparable on exercise style and tax. ES provides additional advantages in trading hours and capital efficiency. // Tax efficiency

Built-In
Tax Advantage.

ES futures options are Section 1256 contracts under the IRS tax code. Every trade gets the 60/40 split automatically — regardless of how long you held it.

60%
Taxed as long-term capital gains

60% of ES put profits are automatically long-term, taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your bracket — even if you held the trade for just 4 days.

40%
Taxed as short-term capital gains

Only 40% at short-term rates. Compare that to SPY options where 100% of profits are short-term — taxed as ordinary income up to 37%.

3yr
Loss carryback provision

Section 1256 losses can be carried back up to 3 years to offset prior gains and generate refunds — a provision unavailable with equity options.

RISK DISCLOSURE — Trading futures and options involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors. Past performance is not indicative of future results. A 99% historical expiry rate does not guarantee future results. Assignment results in a long futures position carrying significant market risk. // Common questions

FAQ.

Do ES puts really get better tax treatment than SPY options?
Yes — ES futures options are Section 1256 contracts under the IRS tax code. 60% of gains are automatically long-term capital gains and 40% short-term, regardless of how long you held the trade. SPY options receive no Section 1256 treatment — 100% of gains are short-term. SPX options do qualify for Section 1256 treatment just like ES. This is general information — consult a qualified tax professional for your specific situation. Tax laws can change.
Can the put buyer exercise early and assign me before Friday?
No — not with weekly ES options. CME's weekly ES options are European-style contracts, confirmed by CME Group. The buyer cannot exercise before Friday expiration — zero early assignment risk. This is one of the key structural advantages over SPY puts, which are American-style and can be exercised at any time. Note: quarterly ES options are American-style. PutYield trades weekly European-style contracts only.
Can I follow these trades using SPY, SPX, or XSP instead of ES?
Yes. SPX and XSP (Mini-SPX) puts are structurally similar to ES — both European style and Section 1256 qualified. XSP is 1/10th the size of SPX and works for smaller accounts. SPY puts are American style with no Section 1256 treatment, so SPX, XSP, or ES are all preferred over SPY. We trade ES for capital efficiency, Sunday night access, and the ability to sell puts while managing an assigned futures position simultaneously.
What is the EMA filter?
Before selling any put, we verify ES is trading above our key exponential moving averages — confirming the market is in an uptrend. If ES is below the EMAs, we don't trade that week. No exceptions. Every Sunday alert includes the TradingView chart showing the EMA check and the go/no-go decision. This is how we avoid selling premium into deteriorating markets — the insurance company analogy in practice.
What account size do I need?
To sell one ES put and handle potential assignment, we recommend a minimum $25,000–$30,000 margin account. For smaller accounts, MES (Micro ES) futures are 1/10th the size and require approximately $2,500–$3,000. Full setup guides for Tastytrade and Interactive Brokers are in the Strategy Vault.
What happens when we get assigned?
If ES closes below our strike at Friday expiration, we take assignment and are now long ES futures at the strike price. We hold and post daily TradingView chart updates in Discord until the market recovers. Historical max drawdown is 2–3.73%. Average recovery time is approximately 7 days. We exit at breakeven or profit and sell the following Sunday's put.
Can I cancel anytime?
Monthly members can cancel before their next billing date with no penalty. Annual members are locked in for 12 months at the discounted rate. No partial refunds on unused months.
